The Baidyanath Jyotirlinga Temple in Deoghar is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, considered highly sacred. According to legend, the demon king Ravana worshipped Shiva here, and the lingam was established when Ravana set it down on his way to Lanka.
The temple complex consists of the main temple of Baba Baidyanath and 21 other temples. It is the site of the massive annual Shravani Mela, where millions of pilgrims (Kanwariyas) bring holy water from the Ganges at Sultanganj to offer it to the deity.
