The Alagar Kovil (Kallalagar Temple) is a major Vaishnava temple dedicated to Vishnu as Alagar, set amidst scenic hills 21 km from Madurai. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams.
The temple is closely connected with the Meenakshi marriage festival. Legend holds that Vishnu himself (as brother of Meenakshi) arrives late to give her away in marriage, and the annual festival re-enacts this charming cosmic drama on the banks of the Vaigai river.
